Recently lost job - and company car

Hi

Not sure if I am posting this in the right section or not, I have recently been made redundant due to 'restructuring' and with it I will shortly lose my company car. I have been on the company car insurance policy for 5 years and have not had any claims or accidents in that time. Previous to this I had accumulated 7 years of no claims discount with my own policy.

The question I have is, will a car insurance company take any of this into account when trying to insure a car which I will (hopefully) be buying shortly? Someone has told me that no claims discounts are only valid if they are continuous and as I have not held my own policy for the 5 years of being on the company policy, the original 7 years are now invalid - is this right?

I would appreciate any advice that can be given, its bad enough losing your job but if I'm going to be paying the same amount on insurance as a young lad does then I'm really going to be stuck. Are there any companies that will take into account the 12 years of claim-free motoring that I have done?

  • I can't answer with any certainty, but I have had a good experience recently with car insurance from AXA where they have allowed me very fair no claims discount on both my cars.

Although your situation is different I think they might be more generous than other insurance companies....worth a try?

    Best of luck

  • When I retired from my job that had a company car I was able to get a letter from our company insurers that detailed my driving record and (lack of) claims.

This was accepted by my new insurers as proof of NCD when insuring my own car.

    Hope this helps.
