Sky+ Record Charge once gone to Freesat - Is it Legal?

Options
I was speaking to a friend the other day, they mentioned that they were considering going across to Freesat from Sky. They already had a Sky+ box and understood that they could still use it.

When speaking with Sky, they were informed that if they went across to Freesat and still wished to use the record functionality on their Sky+ box, they would have to pay £10 per month for the privilege.

I wonder whether this is actually legal??

When you subscribe to Sky for a year, you have to pay for the Sky+ box in advance but the box is then yours. In essense you have purchased a PVR... if you then switch to Freesat they are taking away the PVR functionality unless you pay the £10 a month fee.

It's like buying a car to then be told that you need to pay £10 per month to have the functionality of the engine!

However I think you need to subscibe to sky to use the sky+ box so it would be the cost of the most basic package
Only two big facts are known for certain: you are on a large, spinning rock hurtling through lonely space at about 67,000 mph, and one day your body is going to die. Will a new pair of shoes really help? :p

  • The £10 charge was if you didn't subscribe to premium channels like Sports or Movies. In July they changed this, so that provided you had any channel package (eg their basic package at £15 pm (soon to be £17)), there was no charge.

If you do not have any subscription there is still a £10 charge for using the PVR features of Sky+. icon9.gif

I lost Sky+ when I cancelled my subscription. I have a PVR and get most of the channels I want to watch, but I really do miss the ease of use with the Sky+, but not @ £10/ month.
