Confused about my Bills

I can't make head nor tail of my recent bills. My billing period is 24th - 25th of the month. July's bill was fine clearly indicated my usage from 24 July to 24 August in both gas and electricity - no problem. Direct debits are taken on 5th of the month. On 11th August I provided a meter reading (should have been 10th)...so I didn't receive a bill in September (although paid my DD), then on 8th October recived a bill that covered 12 Aug 2015 - 11 Sep 2015, which showed a credit of just under £250. however, this bill did not show my ACTUAL readings (opening and closing)...it just showed lines and lines of credits from 2014...and that I owed £40 but no E meter readings. Then on 16th October I received another bill for £172.17 for period 12 Sep to 11 Oct but again did not give opening and closing - just showing TOTAL annual electricity from October 2014 to 11 October 15...no where does it show how they have justified a bill of £172.17???

confused -- spoke to them and they said it was just a statement, but they'e billed me 172.17??
