It obviously makes financial sense to the owners to stay open, because clearly they would not bother if it didn't.ScarletMarble wrote: »My shop is a newsagent with some basic food, general merchandise - home furnishings, electrical, toys etc.
It's in a small town with many residents that refuse to shop on certain dates on principle such as 26th Dec and Good Friday etc.
There are four Sainsburys Locals and Tesco Expresses within 10 min walk to 10 min drive away. Plus a couple of smaller newsagents down the same road to work.
All the other shops down the shop road are closed on Dec 26th in the past.Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0 -
Yes they can emake you. You don't get to pick and choose when you work? i you disliek it so much, which you obviously do, why don't you find another job? Why are you so against working on the 26th?0

Do you get any sort of premium pay for Boxing Day? If you do why not ask a colleague if they will do a shift swap with you? Younger workers like students are often up for extra pay especially if it's double time etc.0

I work in a 24/7 365 job and I completely accept that working anti social days is a part of it but what drives me insane is how late it is left each year to arrange the Christmas and New Year schedules.
A couple of years ago we got them on 20 December which was ridiculous.
We've not even been asked for preferences yet - Christmas day we are asked if we want to volunteer and usually enough people want the premium as it's not a fully staffed day anyway but it's not fair to leave it late as most people want to make plans for the holiday days they ARE offI Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
MSE Florida wedding .....no problem0 -

Indeed, my comment was more of a general nature rather than with reference to the OP.Bully boy draconian tactics? The OP tells us nothing that would point to that, but simply that her employer has not made a decision about staffing needs for a date two months away.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -
I guess it depends oh often and with what frequency you say it and for what reason.Takeaway_Addict wrote: »Saying No isn't draconian.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Either on my dept or other depts which I help out.
The other colleagues are part time so work 4-5.5 hours a day, so it's easier for them to work an extra 1.5 hours per day
So, it's ok to expect others to be flexible but you're not prepared to do it yourself?
Unfortunately retail work requires cover for when the general public wants to shop - if that's on 26th and you are scheduled to work then that's life.
You mention there will be other open stores close by - that's precisely why the owners will want to open too - to prevent their customers from finding another store and risking that they prefer it to their usual... as that could be a customer lost forever.
You need to see this as a business that does not just revolve around you.0
