How to get credit ?

  • Credit in your name will only impact you, not any other family members.

Ownership is in my name, but she pays via her bank account each month for contract, showing the bank statement evidence meant nothing.

If your daughter has just come of age she is unlikely to have any 'bad credit' as she should never have had any credit at all.
If the existing contract is several years old then she or rather you will be out of contract by now.
My advice would be to cancel contract and get SIM only contract for the existing phone. You will probably get more than double the minutes at less than half the current price as remember with your existing contract you are still paying for the phone which you have already paid for maybe many times over. Assuming she is now on electoral roll and can be identified I doubt this should be any real problem.
But that's not what she wants is it WRONG! !.... I imagine she went into the shop and tried to upgrade to some really expensive new phone with a hefty monthly payment which may well be why she got refused. As I said try elsewhere for a SIM only. She will then build up a payment history in her own name with the mobile phone company and hopefully in time be able to get the expensive phone that she wants.
We / She took on a new contract after being told on the phone that we could transfer the ownership into her name, which did not happen because of the mentioned in original question.
How wrong some people can be, judging those by what others do..........She users her old phone, and has done for the past three years, unlike all the other young followers out there she has sense and is not interested in keeping up with the joneses. Her new contract consists of just what she needs and costs a mare touch over £9 per month.
Because she has no credit occurs from us as her parents constantly saying to her, If you can't afford it don't have it.. However that has worked against her. seems to me company's want people in dept.

Payment is irrelevant. It's the credit agreement that counts.
  • I agree with Ben8282

    WRONG!
Cancel the contract you have for her and get her on a SIM only contract so that she builds her credit rating. If she really wants a shiny new handset she has 3K in the bank so can afford to buy one outright. This is actually usually a better deal in the long run.

    Good luck.
While I am grateful for the rep[lies I have to point out the below...
As said above, it's not fair to tar all with the same brush.
Cancelling the contract will cost, so that's not the option.
Her £3.000 will be spent on other needs, and not on a fancy phone that will become vintage after a few weeks, as said she has sense and not drawn into this world that everything has to be brand new or you are not with the in crowd, Thank Godd..
  • Getting her on the electoral roll is the first thing you should do. I work in car finance, and I've seen us lend to 18 year olds with no credit but are on the electoral roll.

Your original post conveniently failed to mention that you had taken out a new contract in your name over the phone and had been told that the contract could be transferred into her name.
I really do wonder why you did this rather than taking out the new contract in her name straight away on the phone.
What prevented her from taking it out in her own name over the phone and what led you to believe that things would be any different in the shop?
You also say the new contract costs only £9 a month. That actually sounds like a SIM only to me.
  • "Your original post conveniently failed to mention" . Sorry NOT conveniently,. Just not mentioned, reason, no idea really.....

As others have said already, firstly your daughter needs to get her name on the electoral roll. It has been said a few times I can't see if you have replied to it. If she is now 18 she needs to be registered to vote anyway (even if she chooses not to), but this is the single biggest reason to get rejected - she kind of doesn't exist without being registered, it Carey's a lot of weight, proves you live ere etc.

Next she needs to get some form of credit, the easiest will be a sim only contract in her name - yes it will cost a tenner a month (less actually, I think some do them for £8), but it's a line of credit. Vodafone may have said no but I'm sure somebody would say yes. I'm also wondering if it was just a ploy by Voda so you kept the contract and she got her own, you were transferring, they were not gaining a customer, they gained nothing.

Then just wait it out. I would think nice her name is on the electoral roll and she has had her sim contract for 6 months she would easily get a sub-prime credit card. I always recommend Barclaycard initial, failing that Aqua. Capital One or Vanquis would be options if not. Spend a little each month and pay it off in full - just buy the things she would usually buy but instead of paying cash stick it on the card then with the cash that he would have spent but has saved she can pay it off in full but not until after the statement is generated or it possibly won't generate any kind of valuable credit history. Give it 6 months get a second card and repeat as above. After another 6 months she should find it easy enough to get a prime card, first stop should be her bank. Never go over the balances, never miss a payment, and she will have a decent credit history.

Sorry there isn't a solution to make it easier, but your daughter is in the same situation as so many others and stuck with few options. I know you feel aggrieved about getting anoer phone contract but it's not 'that' expensive considering how much you guys want this to all change. I'm sure you could find someone trustworthy in your family who would like a phone contract and would pay you for it.
