Processed meats and cancer - will you be giving them up?

    There was a doctor on Bbc Breakfast this morning talking about the usual everything in moderation and a balanced diet. And what he did say more of us should eat and i don't. Is liver, that's full of vitamins.

    I think the golden rule for all meat is to buy good quality from good butchers and reputable suppliers who take animal welfare seriously. The meat will be healthier and will taste better anyway.

    Better to eat smaller portions of good quality meat less often rather than filling up with cheap processed rubbish so that you can eat so called "meat" every day.

    We eat so little processed food that I shall be making no changes

    Bacon is a rare treat as I find it makes me thirsty. We eat the best quality sausages I can get and I prefer to cook our own ham but will buy a packet when short of time

    Burgers and the such really are eaten so rarely it doesn't worry me
  • Bacon and sausages are things we only eat in moderation anyway (i.e. 2-3 times per month) and eat a lot more veggie food now which has saved us ££££s. We buy good quality sausages (Sainsbury's - 97% meat) which are delicious and I'm not giving them up. I reckon as long as you eat plenty of veg (i.e. roughage) you can eat almost anything. As someone-else has already wisely said, everything in moderation ;)

    I have a really bad history of cancer in my family so I do limit the amount of red meat and processed meat I eat anyway. I probably eat bacon and sausages a couple of times a month so I won't be giving them up.

    I suspect the only people who will take notice of this news will be people who already have healthy lifestyle. I cannot imagine people who already have unhealthy lifestyles that make them high cancer risks will bother.

    I've spent over 5 hours in the car today, with the radio on, so heard a lot of phone ins on this ... and 'experts' .... and newsreaders etc.

    What I got out of it was utter confusion about what is processed and what isn't.... and how much is "OK".

    People always say "in moderation", but that word is meaningless without a measurement. Anybody who gorges 24/7 on any item will use the phrase themselves and fool themselves into believing what they do is 100% right.

    Is mince processed?
  • Certainly not, I'll just wait for the usual thing to happen and look forward to reading in the newspaper next week that you'll die if you don't eat processed meats!!!

    So presumably if you get cancer you'll refuse the chemotherapy on the grounds that there will be a better drug along in five years time?

    If you were paying attention you would have noticed that they have been at pains to emphasise that it's about the preserving not the "quality", a piece of cured ham from Fortnum's is just as bad as a piece from Lidl.
