Can't help you with your hotmail problem, but you should be able to plug your phone into your laptop and transfer the photos across.

Yes you can. The instructions on their machines are quite straightforward.

we use bluetooth to send pics from the 435 to my old macbook, it is quite easy. Plus we switch off the internet bit on the phone as it drains the battery.

If you switch the Wifi off your phone any active apps will use up the data from your mobile package.
Using the WiFi shouldn't drain the battery that much. Turn it off when you leave home as it uses much more when it is searching for a WiFi signal than when it's actually connected.
It's apps that are using up your battery. You need to check which ones are active and switch off all you don't need.
(taking photo's and putting them on ebay will use up your battery a fair bit).
You will be lucky to get more than a day out of it even with low usage, maybe a day and a half with no ebaying.

And if you are not on a mobile package with data, but on a PAYG, you will find that your balance disappears rather quickly.

The lock screen probably has more effect. Switch it to a minute.

You can also use the e-mail address you used to set up the phone initially to create a OneDrive account, just download OneDrive from the app store.
You can set it up so that every photo you take gets sent to OneDrive, and it gives you more free storage than usual if you do that. Then you can just go to the OneDrive site from your laptop (can't link here, sorry!) and find the photo you wanted, then download it from there.
It would require data usage though if you've turned your wi-fi off, so be careful to tell it not to upload on anything but a wi-fi connection. :)
