We're with Powergen for gas & electricity (we have gas heating). There are just two of us, my wife and me. We currently pay £102 a month in total which seems a huge amount, it used to be about £60. I'm not expecting Powergen to be the best provider, but is this roughly what one would expect these days? For a few quid it is a hassle for us to switch but if we're being ripped off... the other thing is I don't know how to tell what our consumption is to comapre with other providers.

    Hiya,

I'm with powergen and was paying £50 pm which put us in credit during the summer last year but then during the 3 winter months we used £368  but thats due to storage heaters so we're now in debt paying £83 pm.

Apparently they worked out monthly usage out to be £61 and thats for 2 of us in a tiny 1 bed house with 12 power sockets, electric oven, 2 storage heaters, boiler and 1 bathroom heater- how we manage £61 I'm not so sure!!!

Think you need to monitor your kw usage or something...

The only way to check your usage is look at your bills and see what your annual consumption is in kWh - or phone and ask.

The average is 20,500kWh for gas and 3,300kWh for electricity. Very roughly that is a total of £900 to £1,000pa.

However there are so many factors that can affect consumption.

Where you live - NE Scotland is colder than SW England!

Size of property - 1 bed flat or 8 bed mansion?

    Insulation of property

In all day or out at work?

    How warm you like house.

    Baths or showers

    Appliances

    ETC ETC
