The end of subsidised rent?

Hi all,

I'm a renter and have slight concerns over the proposed changes to the social housing subsidised rents next April. Whilst I'm actually on intermediate renting there looks to be a clamp down on over average incomes (30k-) getting subsidised rents.

I understand if your in social housing and you earn over 30k your have to pay the full market rate. Does anyone know if this is actually going ahead or how it will likely be delivered?

  • Speaking personally, I don't think anyone earning more than £30k should be in social housing, and therefore getting a subsidised rent.

    So hopefully, this is correct.

If you can't afford to live where you are without a subsidised rent, move.

    +1 correct!

if youre earning £600 a week then you shouldn't be in social housing, its meant for people in genuine need.
  • Surely those earning that amount will just use the right to buy and purchase the property.
  • You might well be right. Any how's I'm actually on intermediate rent so that's higher than social housing, but still not full market value.

Perhaps you are right about people earning over 30k shouldn't be in social housing. However, that's not the point of the thread.

Is anyone in a similar situation where they may be in a situation where the rent may go up due to their income?

When i moved into this property i was told i wouldn't have a right to buy it. However, this was before the election! I plan on asking this question again.

30k in some areas is not a lot of money - in london where rents for private rent can be 1500 + then 600 a week will not cover this and bills too. 30k is not as big a wage as you think when you have to pay for everything else like full council tax, prescriptions, dentists etc without anyother income

Thanks for this post. I concur that this is not as high as some would think. I think in London the threshold is higher at 40k. 30k elsewhere, but it really isn't much. I earn just under 30k and I really don't have much spare money at the end of the month. Bills everywhere and perhaps worse so because I live alone. I know people survive on less but a lot of people get additional help- not all I know.

£30k is more than the average annual household income in this country.

    Look at your expenditure, then.

  • If you earn less than you need to live in any area, then surely the answer is to move to an area in which you can afford to live.

It's all very well to say you need £40k to live in London, but it's not on to expect the taxpayer to subsidise you just so you can stay close to the Opera or whatever else floats your boat in London.

I have a friend who lives in Buckingham Gate, just around the corner from Buck House, and his place comes complete with underground garage and turntable so he can turn his car around. But he can afford to live there. I would also like to like in such a splendid home but I know I can't afford to so I have to live in my little cottage in the middle of nowhere.

You have to live where you can afford. It's simple economics.

I didn't realise that housing association rents were subsidised. Council rents have not been subsidised for a long time.
