No refund on returning faulty item to Pagazzi

My wife bought a light fitting from Pagazzi through the week (in a closing down sale) but when I came to open it yesterday we discovered the glass in it was broken. The shop was going to close down today so I thought rather than risk another one having a problem and not being able to return it I would just get a refund.
However, they told me I could only get a replacement for the item rather than a refund. Is this correct? From what I can tell reading through the consumer rights information on here I should have been able to get a full refund. As they just point blank refused there wasn't really much I could do.
I can try taking it to another store (much further away) but when I phoned them they seemed to be of the same opinion.
What should I do?
