Hi All - i posted a similar thread last week but im just following up as im currently in the process of setting up my own spreadsheet at home to monitor our daily/ weekly / monthly useage of gas for heating and hot water.

We are doing this as we are paying £80 a month on direct debit and this has been estimated by our supplier for what we will use over the year.
We feel its expensive, therefore we are attempt to better manage how we use our system at home and look at how/where it is used.

(for info we changed our tariff this week so hopefully this will help reduce our costs).

Anyway my quick question is this...
Our gas meter records in m3 on the actually meter - i believe this then has to be recalculated into kw/h to attempt to give you a very loose ball park figure of how much each individual unit costs.
I was given this link to help me as guide to do the calculations for me... please see attached link .....

http://www.energylinx.co.uk/gas_meter_conversion.html

Am i correct in saying by using this link that on average (and i appreciate it is an average) that the following info is correct for gas useage -
1 unit of gas on average = 0.57 pence
10 units of gas on average = £5.93
100 units of gas on average = £59 ..... this is all based on my Postcode area being in South Yorkshire.

Im just wanting to understand as a rule of thumb the calculations, so that i can monitor my daily / weekly use to assist me in understanding how much we are using, where we are using it and how much it is costing us.

Thanks Nick

    Hi,

you will need to know how much your supplier charges per unit, and if there is a daily standing charge, then add vat at 5%.

The tariff im on with SSE is called the "SSE 1 Year fixed V2"

    Question is -

Hope somebody can provide the answer, if not i will call SSE when they are open in the morning.

Simple. 1C3M of gas = (1 x 1.02264 x 39.3) /3.6 kWh X unit rate plus standing charge x days plus VAT minus discounts etc

Or, alternatively, spend 99p on Meters (IOS and Android - Graham Haley). Enter your tariff details for gas and electricity.

    The app will give you:

    1. Daily/weekly/monthly/yearly usage.

    2. it will tell you whether your usage is going up or down.

    3. It will tell you how much your energy has cost since the last bill (provided that you tell the app that the reading was used on a bill)

    4. AND it will link to Energylinx to allow you to compare your energy tariff with others on the market.

In the past week my gas has cost me £3.56 and £37.46 since my last bill. Electricity cost £6.79 and £25.17 since my last bill. The above figures include everything related to the tariffs that I am on.

I have just punched the price comparison button and it shows that I used 2329kWh of electricity and 6949.6kWhs of gas. Current cost £619.41 with potential savings of £48.42 for my postcode.

Edit: Mea culpa - the app may be IOS only.

You are trying to over complicate things.

Gas is charged by the kWh, approx .03 pence or for 100 kWh 300 pence or for 110 kWh the cost is 330 pence which so happens to be the approx cost of a cubic metre of gas.

    All figures are approximate.

Just multiply cubic metres by 11 to give the approximate amount of kWhs then multiply by the cost of a kWh of gas, approximately .03 pence.

You just need an approximate figure.

11 kWh per single cubic meter unit is good enough. Or go with 11.2. That is good enough, too.

Then just multiply by your tariff cost for each kWh. Remember to include VAT.

Example: if your price per kWh is 4.2345 p then:

11.2 x 4.2345 = 47.426p - in that circumstance, saying you get two meter units for a pound is good enough for me. Ten meter units cost a fiver (£4.74).

Of course you also have up to £1.80 a week standing charge to pay - but that is paid regardless of usage so you know that that is there and should not interfere with your monitoring.

Correct but the prices are a little high. Most fixed tariffs theseadays will be under a fiver that is £3.50 to £4.75 for ten units.

If you're not already set up for on line readings do so now - then submit your readings every month and let SSE do the calculations for you.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

That is the last thing you want (of course, it should be done as well.) But everyone needs to take the five minutes to learn how to make the estimate. Without that basic knowledge you can't make sense of whether a statement makes sense. Calculating how much what you have used costs is trivial. Once you are on top of that then you can attempt to parse statements.

You are out by a factor of 10 there, 100 kWh = 300p

OP, go to any of the comparison sites and input your post code and tariff name. It will then show you your unit costs and daily charge
