You might wish to read about the very clever hacking of the Iowa State Lottery and subsequent amateurish collection attempt of the prize:

Is the BBC reputable enough for you ?
As I said, the entire data set is backed up physically and stored in an offline datacentre.
It is hack proof as it has zero connection to the outside world.
Can you imagine the implications if the scenario that the OP described actually happened ?
There is zero percent chance of this happening.
Although as said, banks are hacked in other ways daily0 -
Pretty Boy Floyd (1930's American bank robber) used to destroy mortgage documents so some house owners were freed of the debt.
If a hack wiped out everything you had with a bank/banks, if you had more mortgage than savings then technically you would be better off.0 -
There won't be any paper for sure. What there will be are mainframes and data backups in multiple fire proof, bomb proof, flying saucer proof, but possibly not supernova proof locations.
Unlike all the new fangled rubbish which is online and gets hacked left right and centre mainframes still do most of the worlds back end computing and are not accessible via the internet.

I'm an ex-mainframe dinosaur, and agree with everything except that mainframes are not accessible via the internet - I'd phrase that as they are not easily accessible via the internet, being hidden away behind multiple firewalls, but if they weren't accessible then internet banking and ATMs (to name but two) simply wouldn't work. Although I would say that it's likely the DR mainframe systems aren't connected to the outside world while they are in their backup configuration and would only become so when DR is activated.0 -
Hasn't anyone seen Die Hard 4.0?!?!?!?0
