The Amex "Shop Small" promotion is running until 20 December. Spend £10 or more and get £5 back on your account. Once per retailer, as many retailers as you like.

You need to register for this promotion.

Find small retailers near you at https://maps.americanexpress.com/ukshopsmall

You are dreaming. Some expenditure inevitably goes to a debit card at least.

    Ok, all Cc expenditure.
I wasn't trying to get everyone to agree, just answering the question as to why some people perceive it a bit of a pain.
I use Amex as I think the cashback is worthwhile and I would keep a backup anyway, but it's just a bit of a pain to keep checking what you can u see where that's all. It's not life and death just explaining why it's a bit of a pain.

no debit card spending at all for me, until i started to put some small contactless payments on my TSB card for 5% cashback..

other than that i would be Amex Cashback backed by Barclaycard Freedom Rewards for the odd place that doesn't accept Amex. i find that to be very very few...especially if you just insert the card and don't give them chance to object. "oh, i didn't think we accepted it" is common.

unusually, found a place that used to accept Amex that no longer does last night: Staples:(

How odd, did it just not work or did they say they don't take it anymore? The amount of company business they would lose is enormous. I've come across the odd terminal in staples that won't work with Amex before but the next one over always worked.
  • Same thing happened to me but at my local PO. The self-service card machine declined my Amex but the counter one worked fine.
