Want to switch supplier -- can I take my smart meter with me?

I'm with Southern electric and have their Onzo smart meter.

I'd like to switch supplier but SSE say the smart meter may not work with another supplier.

Does anyone know how true this is, and if so, which suppliers it would work with as we'd like to keep it if possible.

  • I think it will only work as smart with SSE s "white label " brand M and S. BG have the same set up with Sainsburys Energy ( where my BG smart meter certainly does work ok ), but it fails as a smart meter with everyone else. Smart switching is years away I think.

The DCC is due to go live in 2016 at which point smart switching should be possible.

    True.

Ask your new supplier for a smart meter of their own if you still want a smart meter with them.
Otherwise the existing meter will be used as a dumb meter by your new supplier.

Can someone explain what that means?

Google comes up with this and I assume it means ALL smart meters will work with ALL suppliers but I am not sure.

    'Data and Communications Company (DCC)

The DCC is responsible for linking smart meters in homes and small businesses with the systems of energy suppliers, network operators and energy service companies. DCC will develop and deliver the data and communications service through external providers.'

At the moment each supplier has their own communications set up to communicate with there meters which is part of the issue around you loose the smart capability when you switch. When DCC goes live in 2016 (note I don't say when in 16), the DCC will act as a central communication hub removing the need for suppliers to each have their own.

    Thanks.

I find it hard to understand why the DCC did not take control of communications before the first smart meter was installed.

I cannot imagine how much of customers money has been wasted because the roll out has not been planned properly. Of course the cost will be hidden so who cares?
