Computers under £500?

Options
Can anybody help with a good supplier of desktops under £500 - no screens required, but must have 2Gbs of RAM, mouse and keyboard?

We have been using Evesham Technology for many years and their sales and service have been great. Unfortunately they have now gone into administration. It's so hard to find reliable suppliers.

Thanks, Wren

i've used www.pcspecialist.co.uk for my own machine and my OH's in the past few months.
You specify the components, and any software and they deliver it to you.
I've phoned their 0845 helpline to solve a sound problem i had and although i was on hold for around 20minutes, the guy was helpful and the problem was solved.
I'd use them again without hesitation.

Wrenboy - if you use the "buy online" option at the top of the page and make your choices you can specify a custom machine without using their budget guidlines you'll find a few further options for customisation.

That's the way i purchased mine.

Thanks to all for your help and I've also looked at the other thread.

Interesting some people there were also recommending Evesham. We have used them for years (running a small business we buy in bulk) and they have been great both for machines and service. The machine I'm using now was from them - 4 and half years old and good as new. Unfortunately when we placed an order some weeks ago, it wasn't delivered and when we investigated we found that they have actually gone into administration. They have assured us it's business as normal but it's clearly not. Shame.

I have heard many horror stories about Dell and also hate their aggressive marketing - half of my junk mail is from them.

Thanks again and I'm looking at all your suggestions.

You can say that about virtually every large organistaion, they all have their horror stories just due to the size of the user base and the amount of system sales per year.

People dont in general shout about good experiences with compaines as much as the small number that have had negative experiences.

I regards to the marketing emails. why dont you unsubscribe from them from the link in the email?

You wont recieve them again, simple as.

P.S: nothing wrong with Dell, I Have had a few systems off them and they are good value for money.

    Hi Millionaire

I absolutely agree with your comments - large organisations always get stick and people always talk louder about the bad stuff. But we’ve also had personal experience of their products. When we outsourced our IT, contractors recommended Dell, machines broke and no after-sales service or repair. In retrospect the IT contractors were so insistent we use Dell we suspected they were getting commission (as well as getting paid by us). And half of their junk mail is the paper kind; I know it’s possible to stop it but I don’t have time.

Perhaps we we’ve just been unlucky and I do appreciate that with big companies there will be good and bad stories, but I’m going to give them a miss.

Still lamenting the loss of Evesham….

  • Hi Wren, I work for Evesham Technology and can confirm that they are still in business and continue to trade. Check out www.evesham.com I'm sure you'll find what you need.

    Hi MandieC

Many thanks for your update. However we have been a customer of Evesham for many years and whilst you may still be in business we can see you’re not trading normally. We’ve always had great service so its absence was noticed immediately.

We ordered several machines recently and our credit card payment went through quickly enough, but we were unable to contact anyone regarding delivery. Eventually in desperation we decided to contact the MD which is when we came across the Companies House information regarding administration. I then spoke to one of your colleagues who confirmed there had been redundancies. He also said it was business as normal but we’re also paying for service/warranties and there doesn’t seem to be many staff left!

Hope all goes well and Evesham recovers from its current financial difficulties. It has always been a well-respected company and we have recommended it to loads of people in the past.

    Wren
