A few days I was browsing the FTSE 250, wondering where to have a punt with £250. I seriously considered Cable and Wireless, but eventually picked something else. Imagine my horror when I say that it had gone up about 30% yesterday with news of a possible takeover. The company I did pick managed to lose me something like 1.1% over the same period
:rotfl:
I think I will stick to funds ...
Anyone else miss out on something for no other reason that "just 'cos" ?

Here are the rules.
Everything you nearly bought, but didn't, will go up.
Everything you bought will go down.
Everyone you nearly sold, but didn't, will plummet.
Everything you sold will soar.
Now, what was the question?I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

£250?
The fees for buying/selling mean it has to rise significantly before you make a profit anyway....0 -
Yes, that's too small a chuck for individual shares, or anything with trading fees.

Oh, I know it is too small, but I wanted to have a punt, and had I picked C&W it would have been worth it

As part of a job application, I had to write a one page research note recommending a FTSE 350 stock for a UK income fund.
The company I chose to recommend was Amlin Plc. I did loads of research into the re-insurance/marine insurance etc, the sector in general, studied Amlin's annual reports and finished my research note recommending the stock.
I sent the application off to the company one evening, the next morning Amlin soared (+40%) after news broke out that it was subject to a takeover bid from Japanese firm Mitsui Sumitomo.
If I put my money where my mouth was, I would've made a killing

Unfortunately I didn't get the job.
Their feedback said that my application was of a very high quality, but it was 'more the case of them subjectively viewing fit towards the role and the team'....
They did also mention they received a much higher number of applications than what they anticipated."If you aren’t willing to own a stock for ten years, don’t even think about owning it for ten minutes” Warren Buffett

That suggests that the team is mediocre, and would have been unhappy if someone as good as you joined them.0
