Hi 26fin, just had a new Vaillant system boiler fitted. Drilling through two solid walls to drain off the condensate didn't seem to faze the plumber, but he did forget the extra brickwork needed to fill in from the old square flue.
A bit noisy on initial start up, otherwise no problems.

If I had the old system in place, I would never go for a combi, you will be very lucky to get 10yrs out of a combi, much more likely to go wrong & more expensive to fix, even if slightly more efficient than the old system.

Sorry for the delay, wanted to wait until I got home to check the model. I've just checked and it's an Ideal FF280 and was fitted in 2000.
With regards to bring gravity fed it pumped I think gravity fed buy I'm not certain. How would I know that?

My mother in law has had her basic model ideal for over 30 + years and in that time it has had a new gas valve replaced:):)

Just to add,, i still have my conventional wall hung gas boiler that is about 35 years old and my hw cylinder. Its simple and it works. I live in a two bedroom house and also use gas for cooking . My current total monthly energy spend is about £40. Last year i upgraded the controls on the heating switching it to a full Y plan system with 7 day twin channel digital programmer . When the boiler needs changing i will l likely put in a non combi.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Thank you all so much for your help, esp Mababejive. I'm definitely not going to change it. Just going to get it serviced and make the other heating improvements and just change it when it packs in. This will save us about £1500 so very grateful for your advice :-)
  • I'm also very lucky to have an Ideal Classic 270FF that has run without fault for 19 years. I have had to replace external controls. I am just about to replace the timer and the external thermostat with Drayton's MiGenie wall plate compatible with my existing set-up. Everything gets modernised apart from this wonderful boiler.
I have osteoarthritis in my hands so I speak my messages into a microphone using Dragon. Some people make "typos" but I often make "speakos".
