We are looking to get an lcd or plasma tv and the best place ideally would be to put it above our fireplace,it is a gas fire.I have heard that its not advisable to do this or if you do it has to be a certain height above the fire?
Can anybody advise on this please? Any help would be really appreciated.

Good afternoon: Always follow the manufacturer's instructions (eg. could void tv's warranty)...but have to say I wouldn't site a tv above a heat source.

Apart from it not being a good idea, as Canucklehead says, why does everyone seem to think we should now look up at the television, rather than infront of us?

There is mixed opinion from those who have, or propose to do it.

Some types of fire surround deflect a lot of heat, and so it is not that hot on the wall above the fire. Alternatively, prolonged heat can reduce the screens' life.
But in practical terms, how long is the fire normally on for? So will heat be an issue? (retorical question)
As mentioned, the typical UK lounge is tiny, and neck strain may be a bigger worry than the plastic casing melting0 -
I always think they look really naff on the chimney breast - fixed on a wall maybe - but above a fire place, oh no.0

my brother had this great idea of putting his 50" above the fire...like in the USA they seem to have them above there fire's...but in the US they are glass fronted...which we don't have here...anyway...it cost him £150 for the bracket...got it all installed great...you might think...they started with mild neck ache...then when they put the fire on it started to effect the TV so off the wall it came...cost for doing this...re-decoration of lounge as the holes on the wall where the TV was stick out like a sore thumb...and £150 for the bracket which is now in the loft...don't do it...think about this if your fire did effect the TV would you be able to go out and buy another...and re do the wall where the thing was...:Dmy advise move some furniture around and make it fit...:D

Thanks so far for all of your replies, I have found a really useful topic thanks to Iancornholio at http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=534693 which may be of use to others
I must add that my lounge is quite large and the fireplace is centrally located and we tried last night by staring at the picture that is already there and it seems that it isnt too high up due to the fact that we are sat quite far away.I do agree that this would be a different story if this was a smaller room.
