Ercol Coffee Table needs TLC

Any furniture renovators out there.I have an ercol coffee table that needs some tlc. The top has some marks -( maybe water or coffee cup marks?), so think I might need to sand it down but don't know what to do with it next, and it also has a very slight split where the wood has been joined together.
After sanding what do I do with it - Do I use varnish?? stain?? wax ?? or what?
