And another big flag for me is that when you combine the 3 sets of data above there is a complete gap in the record between Aug 2011 and November 2013. Almost 2.5 years where the car only did 3,000 miles! It's possible, although seems unlikely to me. Then throw in that suspect figure of 87k in 2012 from the MOT record, I just don't know what to think. Any ideas?

    07/02/2008 15,501 Audi
    07/11/2008 31,694 Audi
    14/9/2009 15,414 RMI
    18/11/2009 47,274 RMI
    31/12/2009 47,304 RMI
    12/2/2010 48,087 RMI
    2 June 2010 Pass MOT
    03/09/2010 51,784 Audi
    16/12/2010 56,166 RMI
    16/12/2010 56,168 Audi
    2 June 2011 MOT
    10/8/2011 65,517 RMI
    11/8/2011 65,519 Audi
    23 July 2012 Fail 87,905
    23 July 2012 Pass 87,905
    4 November 2013 Pass 68,320 miles
    16 December 2014 Pass 81,716 miles

Mmm. Read that 87 as 67, and it makes sense.
    Another human error, probably.

That's the thing with humans. They make errors. Everything else looks in line, so Occam's Razor applies.

OK, so maybe I am being a little bit paranoid. Still, I'm sure about all these human errors. The MOT in 23 July 2012 failed due to headlight levelling and was put through again and passed. 2 MOTs with the same error? I guess the tester could have copied the figure off the first MOT instead of going back to the car. Ho hum... gotta go and take a look at that dodgy service book again...

Looking at these MOT figures again it does look like the pre and post 2013 numbers refer to completely different cars, does anyone else see this?? The first half have annual MOT renewal date in June/July, and then the milage drops 20k miles and the MOTs are all around November. (It went onto a private plate in December 2013 BTW, so directly after this change).

This being the case there's still a large gap in the Service record between Aug 2011 and November 2013. Two and a half years over which the car clocked up just 3,000 miles, but there's no MOT data or anything for the period. How does anyone interpret this? SORN, Damaged, Clocked, or kosher?

The HPI/RAC checks are just another tool to help decision making. There are plenty of TTs around - if it doesn't feel right, you'll always have doubts so move on until you find one which ticks all the boxes and feels right.

Thanks. I's not the HPI checks here but the MOT history that is intriguing. Whether I buy it or not I'm still interested in what it's revealing. I'm sure some people can read the data better than me so would like to know what's going on here.

The current MOT site is a very early beta, and does get a bit flaky around plate changes. What does the certificate say for the mileages at the last 5 MOTs?

I don't have them I'm afraid because I only saw the car briefly. I'm sure they are all correct after 2013 when the newest owner bought it. I suspect he doesn't have any prior to that. Even the Audi service book he produced contains erroneous info from the period prior to 2013, like it belongs with another car. The question I have is 'why would that be?' The RAC check for this car is clear, the Audi history based on the VIN are available at Audi and seem OK too (up to 65k).

Why haven't you walked away yet?

All I'm seeing are threads where you're looking for someone here to give you the OK to buy it. Either accept the anomalies and buy the thing, or walk away and continue looking.

I'm not sure if you read the previous post, but I'll say it again. It's immaterial whether I buy this or not, that doesn't change the figures being uncovered or the story behind them. Someone must have seen something like this before or be able to interpret the data or the motivations of people behind them. I posted here because it looked like there are professional people involved in the trade that know all the tricks. But thanks for your input anyway.
