I want to transfer 10k euro from a european bank to my UK account in sterlings. Which is the best way to do that? Is it wise to just tell my european bank to do it or I should use another way?

Define 'wise'.
A bank is the most safe and the most expensive way at the same time. Expect to pay a flat fee (depends on the bank. possibly pretty small for € payments in EU) plus ~3% for the exchange. Some UK banks charge a flat fee for incoming foreign transfers too.

I would use a broker. I've used thefxfirm in the past but there are many others. Check around and see which gives the best rate for your transaction. You will need to send them some ID and proof of address stuff. You call them up, book the trade then you transfer the euro to their euro denominated account (should be free in the eurozone). A couple of days later you get the money deposited into your UK account. Could also look at transferwise which is a newer peer-to-peer system but I think works more or less the same way.
I definitely wouldn't do it through your bank.0
