Thanks all. If I cancel a taxi and know they take the deposit i'd have no worries at all, same as if this place had told me I could either put a £20 deposit down *or* use my £150 but if I did and had to cancel, would lose the lot (in which case i'd've put the £20 down)

If you cancelled a taxi waiting at the airport for you, for which you had paid a £20 deposit for (say) a £100 journey, I can say without any doubt that they would be looking for you to pay the balance of that £100. No, they would be expecting you to pay the balance and would consider court proceedings too.

It's not easy being a tattooist sometimes. I'm a tattooist and a lovely young French woman came in when I wasn't busy.

    'Good morning,' I said.

'Non, non,' she said. 'It eez Bonjour.'

'How can I help?' I asked. 'Would you like piercings or a tattoo?'

'Oh, I would like a tattoo.'

'Okay, what would you like the tattoo to say?' I enquired.

''I want a penis,' she replied.

'Oh,' I said a little startled. 'Are you absolutely sure that's what you want it to say?' I asked for positive confirmation.

'Oui, of course,' came her irritated reply.

'Okay, and where do you want it?'

'I want zee ole world to see it,' came her reply. 'I want it big on my arm.'

'Fair enough,' I said, indicating for her to lie down.

It didn't take long, only about two hours and when I finished I must admit it was a lovely job. In very large lettering in various prominent colours it said: I WANT A PENIS.

'What do you think?' I asked proudly.

'What zee fuk!!!' she exclaimed after seeing my handiwork. 'Merde, you are a fuking idiot.'

Oh, deary deary me. She only wanted the world to know she was seeking an emotion the opposite to sadness. What can I do, it's permanent and she can't wear anything short-sleeved now.

Have you read any short stories by chekov or Maupassant?

    Yes.

The £20 would be a committment. But if you fail to turn up and the driver has made the journey most would pursue the remaning balance.

A deposit isn't a contractual limit for damages.

Firstly £370 for 7 hours tattoo is cheap! Tattooist usually charge per hour so at that rate its £52 per hour (approx)

Secondly, you were happy to pay for 7 hours up front! I usually pay a deposit (if requested) and then pay post tattoo. In your case you would have only paid for the 4 hours. But you were happy with the tattooist, so had he/she not been unwell, you would have sat for 7 hours in a tattoo parlour you "had concerns with"... (I know you've answered this above)

what happens if they say £370 for 7 hours work, and it takes 5 to complete (I know tattoos usually overrun rather than take less time)

A good tattooist would ask about previous tattoos and reactions. Unless you know them really well would you expect them to remember you had a reaction to an ink.

Paying post tattoo, would mean you don't owe them your time for the completion of the ink, although as someone has said getting a tattoo finished by another artist doesn't always end well.

I'm getting inked today, my eight. Deposit was a credit note (Birthday gift) of £30. I know it's going to take two sittings so today is 3 hours work (@£80 per hour) with the rest being completed at a later date.

My advice is get it finished with them and then choose another tatooo parlour for your next one.
