Ford KA - Failed MOT

Hello

My 51 plate Ford KA has failed it's MOT on the following points:

Subframe mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded nearside rear [2.4.A.3]

Subframe mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded offside rear [2.4.A.3]

Brake hose excessively deteriorated nearside front [3.6.B.4d]

Brake hose excessively deteriorated offside front [3.6.B.4d]

Please can someone help advise how much this should cost to fix?

Many thanks!

Brake hoses won't be much at all to replace. The subframe - impossible to hazard a guess. The best thing is to get a mechanic to take a look - preferably a local independent, rather than Quick-Fit or similar. If it's something that can be welded then it'll probably not be too much, but if it's a major component that needs completely replacing then you could be looking at a fair amount. As I say, you really need a trustworthy mechanic to have a look and give you an estimate.

A 14yo Ka starting to fail on rot...? What a surprise.

You've got a decision to make. Get this done, then face a similar choice next year - but probably more welding needed. Or cut your losses now.

A quick/cheap/nasty fix might not be too bad, but really will be a get-one-last-year fix. If the subframe needs to come off, it'll be more involved. It really does depend on how bad it is, and where. "Prescribed area" means within 30cm of the actual subframe mount.

Brake hoses won't be expensive at all.

The KA is notorious for suffering from rust and corrosion, typically around the petrol cap and under the doors. Same thing happens to the Ford Fiesta as well, as a Ka is simply a baby Fiesta with an "egg on wheels" design.

Suggest a local independent to check the corrosion and then decide from there whether you think the outlay is worth it for a 14 year old car.
  • Same with focus not just fiesta. Depends how much anti rust treatment it has received. The cost is a big ?
