Today I've meal planned for November - first list, after shopping around I've made lists for each of the supermarkets I need. I've also started a list for Christmas, M&S have 20% off everything today, so a couple of gifts ticked off my list.

  • Going for a coffee is now the new going for a pint. Nowt wrong in that.

How true! And having just mentally compared my current coffee spend to my pre-kids pub spend, I feel much, much better...
  • My DGD put Spending Tracker on my phone and I find it really helpful as I always have my phone with me so I don't have to carry a notebook around or wait until I get home, I just enter all income and expenses immediately and it does the sums for me.

I know it's not very OS, but can I speak up in defence of coffee & cake with the girls? I've got two young kids and sometimes meeting a friend for a coffee is a lifeline -- I imagine that's the case for a lot of people. Yes, I could invite people to my house and it would cost pennies and I often do that, but I don't live right next to all of my friends, and often people want to meet in the middle somewhere. Plus, I have to say (ref: two young kids) that the house isn't always, shall we say, visitor-ready? Sometimes I just need to get out.

I couldn't do it twice-weekly, but being able to do this occasionally is something I think is worth cutting back in other areas for.

Hope I don't sound too defensive. Have been up for a really long time, cursing daylight savings all the way
I don't think you sound defensive at all.
Nothing wrong with coffee & cake with friends - as long as you understand what it's costing you & you're happy with that.
My point was it's easy to pop into a coffee shop & lose sight of how much it's costing.

Daily to do list works for me,
    Weekly to do list also
    monthly to do list

With more broken down lists eg, household cleaning, spending, savings plans, xmas list, when to buy lists, plant care, car servicing and cleaning, birthdays, gardening and decorating lists/ideas etc.

    hth
    regards

Hi SSEH...great idea, and may I suggest that whatever goes on the list, there is also noted the cheapest alternative, for example WINE, WHISKY or WATER.

Hmm... I might have been a bit defensive! I definitely didn't want to disagree with your point, which has saved me £££s over the last few years -- it was just a general grumble :)

Baby back on track, jet lag less obvious this morning...
  • I love lists too :) but I've realised that making too many lists, with too many "things to do" can be counter-productive!

I started bullet journalling, so that all my lists, ideas and everything else is all in one book. also have a spending diary, but have gotten so lazy with it the last few months and I know our bank accounts have suffered for it. It can take a while to set the habit, so I'll start again in November and hopefully by January it'll be easier again. I know some people would consider it unnecessary to buy a new notebook when I already have a few that would do. But it's nice and encouraging to start the new year with a new book so I'll wait til the new year for a shiny new book :)

When budgeting, make allowance for "personal spends" if you can, so that the odd tea and cake out is budgeted for if you really want it.

No-spend days are a great tool. Before I started, I hadn't realised that I was spending most days every month. Not always a lot, but sure it adds up. That's another wagon I've fallen off :o

You're welcome to join us here if you like. ;)
  • A friend has introduced me to freecycle over the weekend and we have found some things that we needed and had budgeted for, but freecycle is free so that means more ££s in my pocket! I have added this to the list and is my favourite so far
