Possible fraud?

I never applied to American Express for a card and got a letter saying my application was unsuccessful, is anyone knowledgeable about this sort of thing?

I would obtain credit reports from the CRAs in order to see if any accounts have been opened in your name elsewhere.

Also, sadly, consider if you have any friends/family at your address who could be up to something.

You could do a FOI request on Amex, asking them for copies of any applications made. It might be interesting to see what they have. A phone number might give something away - if it turns out to be that of someone you know.

I assume that you meant to write "subject access request".

An "FOI request" is for getting information from government and certain other public bodies.

American Express are quite knowledgeable about it. Why not ring them and ask? If you don't get a satisfactory answer then maybe try the SAR route.
loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.
