Mortgage/life protection

The purchase of my new house is going through which is the first house I have bought as part of a family unit. (My partner has three children and due to one of her parents being ill they are going to be living with us).

Given the responsibility of putting a roof over the heads of seven of us I am looking at my options with regards cover should I become ill, have an accident or become unemployed.

It is not something which I have looked at previously or know much about so I am just after some advice please.
