The settings determine when the thermostat controls the heating. 'Manual' means the heating will always run until it reaches the temperature on the thermostat. 'Auto' means the heating will only do that during the times you have set it to be 'on'. That prevents it running throughout the night, for example.

Now that helps! Thanks, so really the thermostat will always work and the house will heat to the temp set on thermostat in any setting ?

But cool thanks for the help

Yes. On most systems it's impossible to override the thermostat to force the heating to come on, so if someone has accidentally put the thermostat down to its lowest setting the heating will never come on regardless of how the programmer is set. Or to put it another way: for the boiler to fire up both the timer AND the thermostat need to agree that the heating should be on.

If the room thermostat is indeed connected to the boiler, you could still switch to a programmable thermostat as I mentioned in my earlier post. In that case you'd just set your existing timer to "Manual On" and let the thermostat control everything.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

That should be it. Just check the on/off times you have set in the controller and make sure they suit the times you and your family need heating (eg 'off' at night and while you're out at work, 'on' in the early morning and evenings etc).

This explains the settings and how to check the times quite well
