Gas used in new home

Hello all

We moved into our new home on the 27th of march this year.

Our gas usage since then has been approx 160 cubic meters

Is this normal usage for a 3 bed semi?

Boiler is a Worcester Greenstar 18i - Brand new. Gas hob but electric everything else!

Cheers!

  • Between 1700 and 1950 KWh, depending on calorific value - perfectly normal. You will, however, use a lot more (at a guess 3 times as much) during the winter months.
  • Nice one! That included having the heating on 24/7 for 5 weeks when we moved in so thats where tyhe majority was used.

    Thanks for your reply.

Why would you need the heating on overnight, especially in March? Do that in the winter and your consumption will soar.
To evaluate your actual usage, you need a to log a full year's usage (in kWh's). As Bluebirdman correctly points out, you can easily use 80% of your annual total in the coldest quarter, so using maybe 15% of the annual amount in 7 months excluding winter is entirely normal.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • We were advised to keep the heating on by the house builder in order to help minimise the damp that can sometimes affect new homes - we also had a newborn in the house.
When I say the heating was on 24/7 I mean on a thermostat, the house is new and holds temperature pretty well so the boiler wasn't constantly firing! We will program the heating to come on at various times during the day this winter.

    Thanks for your coimments

For a new build, you should actually have been informed to keep heating to a minimum to avoid the building drying out too quickly and excessive shrinkage cracks occuring as a consequence ;)

The average household gas consumption is 12500kWh per year
That is about 1150 cubic meters.

But average gas usage is very seasonal. The Ovo website has a good graph that indicates typical gas consumption month by month (as a percentage of annual consumption)
