Thanks GoofyGAT, I have the OEM disk, what little I need to backup goes to 2nd internal HD (using synctoy+ task scheduler daily, then to DVD-RW ).

I guess I'm going to have to spell it out.(Reason for ;) )

What sort of response will I get from MS when I try to reactivate with an 80gb HD and tell them my 20 gb died?

Will they send round the PC PC's?

    Or the MSE moral police?

The other option rather than upgrading my perfectly good HD, is that I was going to have a go at building a PC in the winter, I could bring this forward a couple of months.

I know I could probably buy a ready made one cheaper.
But in the couple of years I've been around PC's, despite advancing years (hair disappearing, reappearing in ears and nose), through a bit of reading and trial and error I've managed to put together 4 computers for myself and family members from other peoples discards and skips!
Low spec but good enough to learn on.

So feel confident about assembling one, with help on spec from this forum.

It can't be more difficult than rebuilding a car engine from scratch, or servicing a combine harvester?
    :D

Found this today, might be useful to anyone confused about OEM versus retail.
