Penguin UK...am I screwed?

I've been stupidly taken in by Penguin UK claiming back my PPI & they've taken a £500 payment from my bank account. They've said this is a 'holding payment'.
The contract states a 14 day cooling off period but it can take up to 30 days to receive the fee back. I've emailed them this morning to both cancel the claim and ask them to fax my bank (as advised by the bank) so that the £500 can be released immediately. I agreed to the claim yesterday.
I'm so worried I'm not going to get my money back. Is there anything more I can do?
I feel so stupid. Totally out of character but after a month of bad luck I got suckered into the promise of thousands of pounds.

Note the timescale down and if they do not return the money within that period then make a complaint and copy in the legal ombudsman.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
