To buy or not to buy?

Options
Ok - this is the first thread I have posted...... so here goes.

I am umming and ahhing over buying a new washer and dryer. My washer is 7 years old was a cheap model due to finances at the time.

Now it's done us well but now it's starting to get a bit smelly and the maintenance washes are not getting rid. I can't wash a 30 deg with it anymore. We've checked the pipes and cleared everything out etc. It's starting to get very noisy when it spins - is it on it's way out?

The dryer was an old one that my mum gave me when we moved into the house - it was 14 years old then  so now it's 16 (should I give it a party - :rotfl: I am kidding on that one). Now I've read somewhere that really old appliances cost a fortune to run, I use the line and airer when I can but I still use my dryer about 3 or 4 times a week.

Here's the question, I am pregnant and I am looking at maternity leave at the beginning of next year, so do I go and buy new appliances now (while I am still getting a full wage) or do I struggle with the ones I've got and hope for the best!

Any advice and statistics on old appliances would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

EM xx

    The question should surely read:

"For the sake of a few hundred quid do I want to be stuck with a washer dryer that is likely to break down when I am either 8 months and 3 weeks pregnant, or when baby needs nappy changing and it will leave me without clothes for either of us that are not soiled in some way or another?"

I know exactly what my wife would have demanded of me, and the above scenario would not have featured on her "Must do before I die" list of experiences.

    In conclusion I would say

    No Brainer!

Go on - treat yourself. Get rid of the old washin machine and replace it now.

Whether or not you go for a washer dryer or separates really depends on space etc. I would always go for separates if I have the room. Each is more efficient at its own job, and if on breaks down you can still use the other whilst it is being fixed.

    Further comment:

If the dryer is doing OK you could continue with that for now and just replace the washing machine. Replace the dryer when it fails. They are not expensive and if you are worried about not having the money to change it in the future, stick £120 in a savings account.

Thanks Hugo - 'tis done. Just ordered 2 new appliances getting extra points and cashback using Quidco etc etc.

Basically it was the dryer I was more worried about due to it's old age of 16 so the washer was the extra but after your comments, no I do not want to get to 8 months pregnant have a broken washer and a pile of washing for me, hubby and the 4 year old.

    So thanks EM xx
