Zero feeback bidder buying cash only item

I have listed an item for my father several times with no bids. Now I have a bidder with no feedback who has only had his/her ebay account for 2 or 3 weeks. The item states 'collection in person and cash on collection'. Cost is £300. I am a little concerned, my father is not in his prime, and wondering what I should be looking out for and how I can ensure he gets his money. Advice greatfully received.
Thanks

If they pay by Paypal refund and insist on cash on collection (cancel the sale if they refuse).

Do not send it via a courier that they have arranged if they try to get you to send it. Arrange the courier yourself if you're happy with it being sent that way, you need to have a tracking number and insurance to cover the item. If you're not happy with it cancel the sale.

Check the notes given. You can get a pen for this if you wish - you just make a small mark on the note and the colour shows you whether it's fake or not.

Obviously check the amount given is correct and don't haggle with them.

Have someone else there if possible.

Make sure there will be no difficulty in getting the item out the house. That way there will be no damage to that item or items in the home and make sure there's nothing of value where someone could easily take it (just in case).

Cash on collection is sold as seen. Make sure the buyer is happy that the item is as expected though as although they can't get a refund it'll save you any hassle/worry with messages if they are unhappy. It doesn't stop them opening a case, but ebay should side with you if you state it was cash on collection.

If they don't pay or get in contact, request their contact details then phone them. Most scammers give a false number, somyou can then have the sale cancelled.

You need cash on collection. If they insist on Paypal, then you need to insist on them paying for a courier that YOU arrange!!

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Regardless of someone having no feedback- when you advertised the item as cash on collection paying in cash what did you expect to happen?

Whatever arrangements you made for someone to be there with your father on collection - just do the same. Take all the normal safety precautions just as you would if buyer had 100 feedback.

  • It's funny really, I've read quite a few threads (both on here and on other forums) which essentially say the same thing:

"I'm selling something that needs to be picked up but I don't want anybody coming to the house..."

Just be sensible about it and it'll be fine...

Thanks for the responses. I expected someone to collect in person as requested. It is just that the bidder has been on ebay for 2 minutes, it could be their umpteenth account, that worries me. Someone with an established account and good feedback would feel safer.

Buyer paid by Paypal over a week ago, I refunded him and explained it was cash on collection. Not heard anything since! How long do I give it before I put in a non paying bidder as I want to get my FVFs back?

You cannot open a non paying bidder as he paid.

You need to message them asking when they would like to collect, then if you get no reponse, phone ebay and say you have a collection item not collected.

I would still go with requesting contact details and phoning buyer to arrange collection. If the phone number is bogus, report to ebay.

Unfortunately you gambled on a collection only item and it may well not have paid off. As pinkshoes says you can't open a non paying bidder case- after all the bidder did pay! You can only suggest cash on collection, you can't insist on it nor can you stop a buyer from using it as it will show as the default payment method. That does mean you have probably lost your £30 FVFs if buyer doesnt go ahead after all.

Have a read of the sticky thread about the problems of collection only items.

Buyer turned up on Sunday and paid cash - no problems. :)
He now also has some feedback now so just a new ebayer who was slow to collect. Maybe I shouldn't be a cynic
Thanks to all those who replied, it has been a learning experience
