Sweets treats for a teenage Crohns Sufferer

My lovely granddaughter was diagnosed with Crohns disease earlier this year and I've been skyping with my daughter today and discussing how difficult it is going to be at Christmas with food type treats. I want to send her some sweets of some description, chocolate is completely off the menu (and poor girl loves it) as it has an awful effect on her poor tummy but other than that I don't know where to start, so I wondered if anyone on here has any experience/ideas they could share please? As postage costs are so high I need to keep the costs of the actual sweets to a reasonable level.

  • What are her restrictions. A lot of people with crohn's have issues with fibre and anything too difficult to break down like seeds or corn.
Some of my friends struggle with fatty foods when they're having a flare up.
Homemade marshmallows are fat and fibre free. Salted caramels and flavored fudge are great if fat is okay for her.

Poor girl, colitis in any form is a miserable experience. The problem is that every CD sufferer has different specific triggers. If it has to be sweets, I would just ask her or her mum which ones she can actually tolerate as and when they discover what they are.

Is there a non-food gift that you can post instead?

Thanks very much all of you. I will ask her mum about the things you have suggested. They are still finding out her triggers, so it is hard work. So far they know that gluten, chocolate and dairy are off limits.

she is 17 julietet and the sweets arent meant as a gift vfm4meplse this is in addition to Christmas presents, its because it would be nice for her to have edible treats to eat over the festive season, like everyone else....she has had a tough year and we want Christmas to be as much like it always has been, or as much as it is possible for it to be IYSWIM. :)

  • Maybe a sort of jam tart or an egg free/dairy free sponge with jam sandwiched between. I think it is best to use a seedless jam and avoid strawberry, but it all depends on her triggers.

Not for the gift, but just because she misses chocolate, there are some options she could try so she can still enjoy it.

Dairy free - almost all non free-from chocolate has some dairy in it, so it could be that she's reacting to.
Carob - a free-from alternative to cocoa with a similar taste.

The former is available in all supermarkets, the latter you may need to source online, but check the supermarket/health food shop.

Another possibility to aid her sweet tooth is Haribo.

Are there no suggestions/recipes on websites dedicated to the disease? This is the case for diabetes.

Is there a chrons online support group? If yes there could be a thread you can get some tips from chrons sufferers. I'm sure your daughter won't be the first to miss chocolate and others may have found some replacements.
    Hth.
