You can download/stream/torrent a few free films from these sites. There's not a massive choice, but they're all in the public domain and legal (apparently).

Many of the 70's 80's films I want have never been released on dvd and are not on the usual official download sites. Does anyone know a safe site where such films can be found? Some of the films are on ioffer for sale and there are various links on youtube to download sites where you have to register first, but I believe most of those are real dodgy as they sell all the email info etc. Anyone point me in the direction of a good safe site where I can either purchase copies, or download for free?0

Tried Usenet? Search below to see if the films you want are there, I don't know the legalities of it though, and you'd have to purchase a Usenet account.

Since the UK rights will be held by a multiplicity of companies, you are not going to find them (legally) all on one site.No free lunch, and no free laptop

The British Film Institute website has video on demand, and also some free films.
