Installing Windows

Options
Hi

I am just re-installing Wondows XP n my PC. I was following some step-by-step instructions off the Internet. Anyway, it said to delete the partition that currentlt contains Windows BUT I deleted the other partition by mistake.

I am not worried about losing files as i wish to format the whole PC but does this mean that I have lost the use of the memory in the other drive? Or have I caused any other problems?

Thanks.

By memory I take it you mean drive space? If so you will have to either re-partition the drive using a tool or restart your installation and then re-create the partition during the start of the install process. Once the operating system is installed you could then go into computer management and put the partition back into use. If you haven't got a tool to do it without losing files you will need to do the installation again from scratch.
  • Basically, it showed two drives that were partitioned , C and D, I deleted the D partition. I have just completed the installation and the D drive is not visible when I go to my computer.

So, you are saying that if I do the installation again from scratch then it will show up and give me the option again?
  • OK, I have found it uder system management, how do I enable it?

Right click on it, make sure it is formatted properly and you should have the option to mark the partition as active.
Are you sure it is your D partition and not your CD drive? When you only have one physical drive or partition you often find D is your CD ROM/ Optical drive.
  • OK. I right clicked and clicked 'create new partition' or something like that. A wizard came up and I followed it through. The D drive is now showing under my computer and it is formatting.

Only problem is that when I click on teh drive in my computer, it says 0 bytes out of 0 bytes for memory! Arghhh.

Is this a partition or have you got 2 hard drives in your PC? Until it formats you will not get the correct size displayed. Let it finish and try again.
  • I think there are 2 physical drives, the C and D. At least thats what there was before I go tmy hands on it!

It sounds like 2 drives otherwise when you scrubbed the partition during install you would have lost access to it fullstop and would have seen 1 big partition the size of the 2 previous ones added together. Let the formatting finish and when it's done open My Computer and right click the drive, choose properties and see what it says.
If you look in your Control Panel, system, hardware, device manager and check your listing under disk drives you will see how many physical drives you have.
