The make your own vanilla pod thing sounds good but A I would have trouble finding the pods and B I'd rather drink the voddy with ice, slice and a dollop of tonic :):):)
Occasionally Lidl have them in the Deluxe section for a v reasonable price - £1.50 for 2 long pods last time I bought them. So much better value than Schwartz / supermarket own brands.

You can buy vanilla pods on ebay. They're much cheaper than the supermarkets, come in different grades, and you can buy them in bulk.

    I think I got confused here :o

The item on my lust list is actually vanilla bean paste, which looks nearly identical and retails at £6 in Sainsbos. If that's ever on offer I'll be jumping at it - weirdly seems to be at a low price in Waitrose.

When I looked on the shelf the other day £4 was the standard price for the extract.

I bought my first ever little bottle the other day ... as recipes seem to want it, yet it's not something I've ever had/bought/used, I saw little bottles (38ml) at 85p in Mr L the other week so bought that ... along with a bag of brown sugar, another thing I've never bought before.

Most recipes seem to have rafts of ingredients one's never had/used and never bought.

It is 100% typical for me to bake with Vanilla extract, as for brown sugar, not common nor unusual in my experience. I don't have many recipes that call for it, and some that do say caster sugar is fine to use instead.

Every cook is different it seems :)

According to MySuperMarket it was on offer at a low price, and 3 for 2 although there was no sign of this on the SEL.

When I scanned it through the till earlier it came up at £5.99.
