HSBC BT Credit Card - what happened to the cashback? It seems to have disappeared!

Hi all

I recently applied for an HSBC credit card after having seen it on this site. It ticked all my boxes.... 32 months 0% on BTs with a fee of 1.4%.

However, there was also some kind of "cashback" offer. I cannot remember the exact amount. I think it was around £25; which worked out perfectly for me as it would more or less wipe out the fee. I also cannot remember whether the cashback offer was from HSBC directly or from someone else.

Anyhow, I have applied and been accepted and have now received the agreement forms etc. There's no mention of the "cashback" there. And I've just looked at all of the BT credit cards in the MSE article and this one is no longer there.

So I wondered if anyone has any info as to what the deal was, where it has gone, when it was pulled, etc etc. Just knowing what the deal was would be really helpful as I can then call HSBC and query it with them without sounding too half baked!

Also, without that "cashback" I think there are now more cost effective options available. But would it be unwise for me to turn down the HSBC card at this stage of the application in favour for another card? Will it hurt my credit rating? Any other potential downsides?

Many thanks

Max

  • cashback was £25. Offer ended at the start of Oct. In order to get cashback you have to spend £100 or do a balance transfer within certain time (60 days if I remember it correctly).

I took the same card, later on saw the other offer by Halifax with £35 cashback and "upto" so many months, applied for it and got refused :-)
Give it a go if you can afford a rejection, you don't get if you don't ask.

  • @Candyapple. Hands up - fair enough and guilty as charged. I've no idea why, but every now and then it does not occur to me to google certain things. And this was one of them. Not being lazy, just a bit stupid!

@user1168934. Thanks for sharing your experience. I've just called HSBC and they are saying that I made the application on 02/10. So looks like I won't qualify in any case. I could have sworn I made it in September, but I've no proof or email confirmation or anything like that so I don't suppose I can do anything about it.

You're right; I haven;t got anything to lose and so might as well give Halifax a shot. Did you get your application result instantly or did you have to wait long for it?

    Many thanks

It was rejected instantly right there - my credit history is excellent by the way.

I got the £25 after about a month or so of opening the account and doing the BT. Then I got it again last week!

I fully expect the second £25 to be reclaimed fairly soon though....
  • Hi Seagull

I recently remembered that I'd never got the £25 cashback and phoned HSBC. They didn't have a clue so I emailed and was told I'd applied on 9 October which was too late to qualify. I knew I'd applied before 30 September and checked their acceptance letter and it was that that was dated 9 October. I emailed again, insisting I'd applied prior to the end of September and they have now admitted that, due to a large number of applications, some were processed late. They have credited the £25 and added £10 by way of apology. It might be worth having another go to get your £25. I do wonder how many more people have lost out.

i applied, and was successful, on 2nd January.
with other successful applications and the limits i could bag, i haven't completed a BT..just bought a lottery ticket;)
