Sorry, I don't 'get' the joke.
I think Andy is pointing out that you have one of the biggest, heaviest hogs installed on your machine...(Mcafee) But, you don't want to make your pc heavy..........Too late.............:D

Avast or Avira. Or Kasperksy is free if you use Barclays online banking. Your PC won't be any 'heavier', as you need to remove McAfee before you install anything else. You musn't have multiple AV programs running. If you are paying £3.70pm for McAfee, that's £44.40pa! Yet you can buy it from Amazon for £17.99....not that it's worth paying for at any price.

I think someone has got their wires crossed here. It wasn't me who mentioned the 'heavy' word, it was the poster after me, Double V.

Andy misquoted me! No wonder I didn't see the joke;)

I get NetProtectPlus (McAfee) as part of my broadband package from BT. I didn't make a conscious effort to choose it or buy it separately.

I had McAfee as a package offering when I was with o2.

After awhile I got so feed-up with it, I dumped it.

I use Advast free as a real time checker.

One good pay for programme I came across is Gridnsoft Anti Malware.

It has wiped a lot of unwanted malware etc.off my computer that McBloat never did.

    Pesky DOUBLEV, hijacking threads ..
  • If you do decide to get rid of McAfee you might need to go on their website & download their removal tool as I'm not sure if the normal windows uninstall gets rid of everything ?

As for the OP - anyone can send an email from a mail sever (assuming they have access, cost about £10/month for your own at most)

If you have your own mail sever, you set the rules. One such rule may be that sender email address does not have to match the real thing. I.e. Running my own sever, I can send anyone anyone an e-mail that appears to be from say xxx@no10.gov.uk

This has nothing to do with the reply to address, but it's the send address. Obviously nothing is further from the truth, but the reason spammers use this method is that your own e-mail is unlikely to block e-mails allegedly from yourself.

So yes, they aren't using your own e-mail address.

There is a way to block them though.
OPEN the offending e-mails, and you want to "view source". Not every e-mail app lets you do this, I use office outlook, and that does, can't comment on others..

You want to find an originating "ip address" or domain. This will look something like

122.241.200.49 (four numbers separated by three dots)
You may also be lucky and find the offending domain. (Whatever.com or spammer.ru )

Instruct your email program to block /spam all messages from that originating ip/domain

DO NOT BLOCK ANY OTHER IP OR DOMAIN OR YOU MIGHT NOT RECEIVE ANY E-MAILS FULL STOP!

You can also use a service like spamhaus or similar.

Hope this explains a bit and helps. Spam from e-mails is thankfully a fraction of what it was a few years ago, but still accounts for billions of e-mails / day

greatest achievement was flying true solo on my 1st day @ flying scholarship. I put this down to 3 things.. 1) Luck 2) Lax rules back then 3) MS flight SIM 5 & joystick!
My worst was becoming mentally ill. The flying school wrote 3 yrs later asking me to come back as instructor, I had to decline on health.. Advice: live to the max each day
  • Thanks very much indeed, Xsadna, for your response which was an object lesson in clarity. I feel much more reassured now I have a better understanding of how things work:T

I am able to view the source of my emails, in fact it was one of the first things I did when I first started receiving the ones that I posted here about. The problem was that I didn't know what to do about them after that:o.

Thanks to you the problem should, hopefully, be resolved :j:beer:
