International Money Transfers

I am an American living and working here, and I have periodic need to move money over to my bank in the US. I'm looking for a way to cut the fee and get a good transfer rate.
Currently I pay £24 in fees, I think the rate was £1=1.77 on a day when "the exchange rate" was 1.79. (Latter from https://www.x-rates.com)
Western Union is NOT the answer. Their fee was £49!
