New desktop, is there a preferred OS?

Options
After a new home PC and wondered if there is a better, or preferred operating system, or is it newer is better? I'm assuming it will be a Windows PC, so go for the latest, or buy one without and OS and shop for a 'preferred' version?

Will be used for basic web browsing and couple of share dealing sites, so nothing fancy

Whatever you get from Windows 7 onwards you'll be able to upgrade to 10 for free for just under a year. If it's Win 8 you may as well do that as I know of few who prefer Win 8 to Win 10 but there are many Win 7 stalwarts.

No -- Linux is the preferred OS these days.

  • I've got a 10 test installation running and it seems useable, although I don't like the start menu much - haven't looked into how customisable it is yet, however.

Visually I prefer 7 (8 was just unpleasant).

Depends on what you're doing. I prefer Windows as a desktop OS but all my servers are linux (debian) based. Well, apart from the one that has its origins in the Berkeley standard distribution.

You won't get a sensible answer on here......Most people will be partisan to the OS they are with and couldn't possibly admit there is a better alternative (including me;))
Personally I would buy a new machine with the latest OS already installed. But, I'm not you.
Do some proper research (not asking on a forum) then make your own mind up, would be my advice (for what it's worth).
    Happy hunting....:)

Chromebook? Or maybe an Android computer. Although personally I'd just go for one with Win 10 ready installed.
  • Buying a new PC with Windows 10 installed will be much cheaper than buying the OS retail. Plus there's an up to £100 cash-back from Microsoft in Oct if you have an old PC/laptop to trade-in
