This response is a bit rude frankly.

People get told to look up old threads for information, and then when they do, they get jumped on by the forum police.

But a wholly necessary one it being unhelpful all round to necro old *I have a single problem* thread with a clearly unrelated new problem.

Particularly if the new poster actually want's an answer -once the new poster's question jumps back a page people won't be diving into page 7 of a 9+ page thread to look for the discontinuity. Much effort/input then gets wasted all round with people replying to a 2 month old problem the OP has long since left behing and ignoring the person who's question got lost

Yes it's useful for people to search in case their exact problem has been covered before

If it has not been covered feel free to start a new thread

If it has not been covered really really don't grab an exisitng old 8+ page thread on an unrelated but ever so slightly related subject

I know no forum (except maybe ultra low traffic ones) where that is considered helpful or sensible. Bad idea to encourage it Petra.

I personally thought you were unnecessarily sharp with sderrick.

The real reason why I think tagging onto old threads is a bad idea is that a lot of posters read the first page and reply to that, leaving the person who has recently posted asking for advice - whether on an almost identical situation or a totally different one - out of luck.

sderrick - I hope this hasn't put you off posting on MSE.

yes that's exactly the point I was making

I'll try to be a little less sharp next time but I was bought crashing back having subscribed to the original thread to find.....

......a newbie (or at least someone who doesn't post very often) who'd gone to the trouble of searching for what he/she thought was an appropiate thread and posted on it......?

And - hasn't started a new thread for his/her question.
  • I'm not put off guys, don't worry :)

I hold my hands up and admit I probably should have read this thread more carefully. I thought it more a Q/A on general questions regarding loaning money to family members as I rarely see single question threads reach 5+ pages.

    Anyway, enough derailing :rotfl:

It should be ok. I just don't see any point in writing so defensive letters on one side of the deal . Is the person who is going to give you that money going to write something similar ? Are you going to go to solicitor to certify both letters? Iz the person that is going to pay you money going to include the clause in his/her letter :"if sderrick pays x amount of money to other relative I will pay him x amount of money"? If there are time constrains when is all this faff with letters going to be done ? If you ok without a letter issued to you why is another relative not ok without a letter for them ?
In short it does not make sense
The word "dilemma" comes from Greek where "di" means two and "lemma" means premise. Refers usually to difficult choice between two undesirable options.
Often people seem to use this word mistakenly where "quandary" would fit better.
