Princess Lou II If you have a local market use it fruit and veg are usually cheaper and fresher than supermarkets. We have a good meat and fish market. I find if you go in the last 20 minuets of the day they will be selling some things off cheap as they just don't have the amount of cold storage that a butchers shop does. If it is open several days try shopping at the end of the day when they are closed the next day.

Most market butchers buy chicken breasts from Billingsgate in large packs. The put out the best of them earlier in the day and then sell off all of the smaller but at the end of the day. I regularly buy 1 kg chicken bits for £5. I bag it up in portions and freeze it. That way it will last me for a couple of weeks.

Take a good luck round your market earlier in the day as it can be quite busy at the end of the day. That way you will be able to see what is being sold of cheaper. Far from lasting less time market produce tends to last longer as it is fresher.

I second Ald! and Lid!. if you cant get to them get trying all the own brand stuff and some value stuff.

when the situation is easier, have you considered trying a "buffet", mezze, smorgabord style meal which allows people to nibble things they might not be used to as well as safe favourites?

Buffets are about the worst scenario for a vegetarian/vegan, unless they are totally veggie/vegan buffets. The reason why, is people use the same spoon for different dishes, even although there is a spoon in each dish.

    Maybe in your family

I'm perfectly capable of feeding my Muslim family along with the rest of my Christian family without cross contaminating. We know pork ( and pork products such as gelatin) cannot be shared and no one would dream of using the same serving utensil

In this situation we are talking a family situation where it's easier to " police". Not a cheap hotel all you can eat buffet

Yes you are perfectly right, I'm not talking about my family circumstances, where everyone is well aware to use the individual utensils, and wouldn't dream of doing otherwise.
