I have bought a new HP 255 with 4GB of memory. I wish to upgrade this by adding a single 8GB stick of 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM.
Then with the removed 4GB, adding it to my old HP 655 laptop that runs DDR3 PC3-12800 Unbuffered NON-ECC 1.35V.
Before I go ahead and buy some memory, will this work??

I think it probably will work, but why run under-speed RAM?0

PC3-12800 is 1600MHz.....
Better to run 2 x 4GB unless you intend to run 16GB at some stage.0 -

1)New HP 255 is brand new and runs 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM. Only has 1 RAM slot with max 8GB
2)Old HP 655 currently has 4GB but can hold 8GB, ram speed is DDR3 PC3-12800 Unbuffered NON-ECC 1.35V. Has a spare slot.
As I had a spare stick after upgrade of new laptop, i thought and hoped it would work in the old one.0 -
Confused now, when I look on Crucial it also has PC-14900. So will that work on the old HP 655!?

Yes, RAM from new HP will work in old HP.
Either will work in new.0 -
Do Crucial display memory speeds quicker than the motherboard spec, on the basis that it is backwards compatible?0

Yes, it just means that the DDR3 memory is compatible. Sometimes 'faster' RAM is released after the machine was released.
Just buy the DDR3 PC3-12800 unless it is more expensive.0
