Recommendations for stairlift for straight stairs?

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on this, as there seems a wide range of options. We are looking to get one installed at home for occasional use (once a week) for my my mum, hence maybe a slimline one? Probably looking at heavier use in the next 3 years when she moves in.
I have read very mixed reviews of particularly one of the bigger named brands - stannah, but wondered if anyone had any other experiences or suggestions?
Or even if such a thing as a mildly attractive stairlift exists with nice seat covers, rather than one that looks like it belongs in a hospital... But this may be unrealistic

We used Direct Stairlifts
http://www.directstairlifts.co.uk
a couple of years ago and they did an excellent job.
They were recommended on the MSE disability forum.
There was no hard sell as with the larger companies and their pricing is totally transparent as it is on their website. We paid around £1,300 for a straight stair lift.0 -
Great thanks for this, I'll have a look at the website. Will also try the forum you mentioned for more info. Cheers0

My Mom bought hers from a local shop that sells disability aids for £1300 and it was manufactured by Brooks Stairlifts.
I would suggest you also look at including some sort of service/breakdown cover.
My Mom had a cover from Brooks themselves and they always rang her to arrange the annual service when it was due. I called them out once to a noise and they checked it out and said it was fine.
I had reason to call them out when I found mom on the floor and she had no idea how she got there but I thought I had best ask them if they would check the chair out just in case there had been a problem and she had got out the chair. They were more than happy to carry out this extra service at no charge to satisfy our concerns

Please, Please, Please, get an occupational therapist out to assess your mum
The reason for this is to make sure she will be safe using one especially if she has a deteriorating illness.
Also the space at the top of the stairs must allow adequate turning room for the seat so that mum wont come toppling down the stairs if she is unsteady on her feet.
Their advice will be invaluable to you and save you money in the long term.0 -
