  • have you priced the cost of oak flooring to cover the floor area, roughly 23 square meters isn't it?. What is the thickness and quality? a good 15mm thick oak floor would cost £30 a miter, if this adds up to £690 plus door bars etc. It is reasonable don't you think. I would research the prices in your local flooring stores.
  • OP says laminate not solid oak. Quote seems reasonable to me. Assuming at least £20/m for decent laminate, plus underlay and trim I'd expect material cost to be approx. £500, maybe a bit more. The guy who did our flor for us charged about £12/m fitting I think so say another £260 fitting, that leaves you with the additional labour for removing the vinyl and presumably waste disposal. Seems ok to me.

    14'X10' is 13m2

That's a crazy price especially since its using beading, and not undercutting skirting boards.

Get several more quotes, and get them to split out their quote, and the type of laminate they are going to use.

its no more than 1 days labour for a single person, so labour should be no more than £200
  • martinsurrey - maybe I misread OP's post but isn't the room 18x12? Or maybe its both the 18x12 and 14x10 room, OP wasn't very clear. If its both, then thats over 30sqm, very good price IMO.

damn my Monday morning head... you're right, I misread, its a through room, so yes, over 30msq, which makes it a bit better as long as its a good laminate, and not a 6mm B and Q special

Thanks for the food for thought. Yes it's two rooms in total the laminate is not solid oak and costs £13 psqm but is in the sale for £10.97psqm. I think they said its 8mm thick if I remember correctly.

Price includes underlay too not sure if I mentioned that. Total fitting cost and removal of existing vinyl is £356. They also state they will move up to five pieces of furniture per room excluding white goods.

  • Who makes the laminate? At that sort of price I'd say you'd be looking at cheap to mid-range laminate at best.

Good quality makes of laminate include QuickStep and Balterio. QuickStep to have some cheaper ranges at around £12/m but the decent, realistic looking stuff with grooved edges will range from £18-28/m. We have the Impressive Soft Oak Natural which I think was around £22/m and its very good (8mm thick).
