Buyers not getting what buy it now means.

Having put a few things up as BIN rather than auction there seems to be a common thing happening. I had an item which eventually racked up around 14 watchers after a week - someone finally bought it then I get 3 messages saying along the lines of 'has this been sold', 'has this ended early - is it still for sale' and one said 'i fell asleep and missed the end of this - is it still available'. Do they not realise that buy it now means they can 'buy it now'. This has happened on a few items so far.

We've thought the same...some people are used to the older Auction format.

We list BIN's GTC & there is no end time shown.

A friend using 30 day BIN's which mostly only sell when the listing is ending, so he is trying 10 day listings to see if they sell quicker.

    Happens to me too..
I also sold something on buy it now and had someone offer me a low price after I'd sold it. They said I see the Listing has finished will you take £30. ( about half what it sold for ) ha

It isn't just BINs! I have just today had a message from someone who wants me to relist a sold auction as 'it isn't fair' that someone else has bought it as he asked a question which I did not respond to and I should appreciate that he needed a chance to bid depending on my response.

The question is a simple one and covered in the listing and he asked it 12 minutes before auction ended. Sellers are obviously not allowed to have a life.

  • I'm thinking of adding in the descriptions 'This is a buy it now not an auction - if you want to buy it hit the buy it now button'. Then again there is a majority that never read the descriptions...

I'm also amazed how many of my 30 day BIN auctions sell in the closing seconds.

I think many buyers expect the seller to have a panic attack or something if it hasn't sold with a few minutes / hours to go and slash the price right at the end.... then the buyer has a similar panic that it may not be re-listed and they'll lose their chance.

I also get best offers with 2 minutes to go. As soolin says, do you think I'm sitting watching every auction close? :undecided
    • The rich buy assets.
    • The poor only have expenses.
    • The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.

I also have had offers in the past, 20 min before the end of BIN listing, i'lol give you £X if it doesn't sell, usually offering half of the price listed. I usually reply thanks but no thanks, I'll just relist it again.
  • Wondering if anyone can hel with this problem. Bought 2 items on an auction site. Rec'd emailto say I had oe & cost/fees etc. This is a site used by lots of auctioneers. I rang up the saleroom to pay for the items but the saleroom said sorry it has been sold by mistake to someone else (lower bid than mine) When I said I wanted these items he said I had to deal with the auction house that put up the items and not him What do I do now? Is it a legal binding contract. Not too sure how auctions work and how they maaged to sell it to another customer "by mistake"!!

I had some last second offers. One was something like £1 for a £100 item, I didn't even get a chance to do my usual £99.99 counter. Several others were acceptable offers but just too late. Daft system as far as that goes, a chance to respond would generate a sale.

Pam this has nothing to do with this thread at all, you need to start your own thread on the main eBay/Auctions board where people can help but hijacking this thread isn't polite or allowed by MSE's rules.
