Anyone Scoot to work?

Options
Just wondering if it was a viable means of transport for a commute about 4.5 miles long.
About to start a job with 'normal' hours, have done a 'trial run' and it took 35 minutes by car! (Usually about 10-15 mins non rush hours). Public transport would take about an hour!

Cycling could be another option however I would like the option to use public transport If I wanted to and unless I get a folding bike I couldn't do that!

So any people that scoot to commute out there???

I'd get a bike before i thought of a scooter.

I'm a bit confused. Why would having a bike mean you couldn't choose to leave it at home and get the bus?

It's the perfect distance for cycling, and would take 30 mins max at REALLY easy pace, probably closer to 20 mins usually.

I presume it means the option to take the bus one way if the weather is bad - I tend to ride my brompton folder in to work but often my OH picks me up on the way home, and this would not really be an option with a normal bike as I would need to faff about removing wheels, folding car seats etc

I think 4.5 miles would be pushing it for a scooter - the tyres aren't right so it'd be a very jarring journey.

Thanks for all your advice thus far!

A few reasons why I'm a bit tentative about a bike:

    1) I'm in wonderful hilly sheffield, I live on a hill and my place of work is on another hill!
2)I'm not the fittest person nor the best cyclist, I last rode a bike when I was about 10!
3)A decent cycle costs much more than a 'Commuter scooter'

I really would cycle if it wasn't for the hills, with a scooter I can simply walk up them. I have the option of scooting half way and catching a bus for the 'uphill' section.

I get you about Sheffield, but did you know there's a government initiative for a loan to buy a bike? I'll look for the link.

Question is, are they road legal? A lot of yoof use them (during the hours of darkness) around where I live and none have lights/reflectors etc. Mind you, it's not often do I see the boys in blue taking much notice.
