refit house whilst living it, what to do first

Hi all, i am moving back into my parents old home in the near future. The home is an old 1950's prefab which is outdated and needs some renovation work done whilst we will be living in the property.
I am asking for advice in a which order should i get the work done as the house will need the following:
Electrics: not many power sockets in all rooms, so re-wire?
New kitchen to be fitted?
Central heating, old boiler behind fireplace in living room, combi bolier needed?
Certain part walls to be removed, which being a prefab i'm unsure about.
Fitting of french doors in dining room.
All the decorating, internal doors etc i realise will have to be done when all the other work has been completed.
Many thanks in advance

  • I'm going to be in the same position albeit living with my two children rather than moving back in with my parents. LOADS to do to the house and it's probably 70% fabric of the building type work, 30% cosmetic (so decorating, flooring, new kitchen/bathroom aren't going to happen until way in the future). As the house I'm moving in to is damp and having had a homebuyer's survey done on it, I know work is needed to roof, chimneys, brickwork and render. Clearly due to time of year, that would be important to make sure the house is weathertight before anything else. So time of year is a factor on some types of work that might need doing.

The choice of whether to change to combi boiler (for God's sake if you do don't get a Ferroli) is up to you but in terms of electrics, you can't really make a decision on the scope of the work unless you have a full test of the system first then you'll know how much needs doing. You'll need to plan out where you intend to put things (lamps, kettles etc) before you go ahead with decorating work or new kitchens so that these basic requirements are put in in advance of those works and could be agreed with the electrician.

You could attend to plumbing and electrical works around about the same time since both could require exposing of walls to run pipes/cables.

Think about how removing walls etc might affect where pipes and electrical cables would run and whether any would need to be moved prior to doing that work. In terms of removing walls, you'd need the advice of a builder or structural engineer and would need to be clear whether you'd need building regs approval during/following the removal of walls.

Hope all your work goes ok!
