I have an oldish desktop that is rarely used except to print anything as it's linked to the printer. The printer has now packed in and I have ordered a wifi printer and want to use it with my smartphone and iPad. 2 problems ...... How do I save all the pictures on my desktop? That's all I really want that's on the old desktop.
Also I was hoping to take the desk away but can you do that with the wifi printer or does it need to be near the broadband wifi router box from Virgin ? Can I do this myself when the new printer arrives , it's just a basic one a HP Deskjet 2540 ?

Copy the pics you want to a USB flash drive and copy them over to where you want them. Unless it's a network printer, it connects by wi-fi to the device you are printing from, so must be within range. Or you can connect it by USB if you want.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Thanks for replying but that means nothing to me..I'm sure I can get someone to help me transfer the pics on to a pendrive. So the printer goes near to the box to pick up a signal ?0

The fact the printer has stopped working doesn't mean the computer doesn't stop working. You can fire it up and use a USB Pen Stick/Drive to copy your data.
One of these:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-Technology-DataTraveler-Flash-Drive/dp/B00G9WHMHC
Plug into a USB port, it shows up in (My) Computer as Drive E, F G or whatever, then just right-click on the pictures and select Send to -> Drive E/F/G/H or whatever.
With regards to the wireless printing, you can put the printer anywhere you like as it's wireless. Unless your property is mansion size, the signal will easily be receivable by the printer anywhere.
Normally to set the HPs up you connect them via a USB cable initially then set the wireless connectivity up later. For the Smartphone and iPad, you get the apps off the Play Store or Apple store as appropriate and they should sort themselves out.0 -

Ok I seem to have got the printer set up . Watched a bit on you tube there. I want to get rid of the desk top and the old printer.... I obviously need to keep the router from Virgin media ? Yes ? So just checking before I take all apart. Where does this need to be plugged in as there are a lot of cables from the tower and printer etc , scared of pulling the wrong one out and it going pear shaped. Also if I want to print from my iPad or phone do I just go to settings and click on the deskjet set up on the wifi ? That's the make of my printer0

just pull all the leads out of and connecting to the things you are removing, leaving the router.
keeping the old hard disk and/or writing a copy to cd or dvd would be sensible, if the pen drive is the only place you have the photos. It would also save you worrying about someone else getting at your data if you plan to dispose of itDon't you dare criticise what you cannot understand0 -
Thanks I will just keep the hard drive just in case....
I haven't downloaded any apps from apple in order to print do I need to do that ? Can't believe I've done Al,this on my own , so pleased
I'm almost there0
