Sharing a Sky Aerial

Comments

  • My father just told me his neighbour is getting Sky installed and has asked to be connected through our aerial. In principle it would be fine but it sounds a bit suspect first off.

Does anyone know if Sky would connect 2 separate homes via the same aerial? We live in a 1st floor maisonette and it is the home below that would be getting Sky if that makes any difference.
Sky uses a dish, not an aerial.

You can't split the cable from the LNB on the arm of the dish (or you can, but it doesn't work like splitting an aerial cable). The LNB is an active device controlled by the sky box, it is not a passive device like an aerial.

I can think of no reason to do this or to agree to it.

    Yes they do!

Recently Sky connected another flat to my dad's dish which is several doors down from him. This has annoyed me because they never asked permission to do this, and there was absolutely no reason why another dish could not be fitted (apart from a bunch of draconian residents who object to Sky dishes and kick up a fuss when a new one appears!) So, they do connect without permission. I am still peed off that they connected this dish without 'our' permission and would like to ask them to remove the connection. (The reason I am annoyed is because of the 'fuss' kicked up by some residents when my dad had a new Sky dish fitted... complaints made, rules broken... trust me long story!)

I should add the flats my dad lives in, has several communal Sky dishes in situ, but whilst they still work they do not support Sky+ etc. as they are extremely old!
  • Your dad could just unscrew the cable from the LNB.

The residents that complain could stump up for a single big dish and a mutiswitch so everyone could have a feed from that and no-one would need individual dishes unless they wanted to point at different satellites (for example, I have a motorised dish in addition to my "Sky" dish as I want the Italian channels from Hotbird at 13E)

We would need a big ladder to get to the dish! Those residents had the option of upgrading the communal dish to a more suitable one but the tight fisted sods decided against it because it would mean a small increase in their 'service charge.' Me and dad have joked about getting a bigger dish to pick up channels from aboard just to wind them up!

Then tell Sky to come and disconnect it or say it will be done at your expense. The dish is yours, not theirs (it is not leased, or maintained by Sky after 12m), so what they are doing is completely wrong.

Cheers for the information, I am going to email them with a complaint! :)

I was thinking the same. As you own both dish and Sky box, they have no more right to use your dish than they have to use your box (ie no right at all).

Suspect that this is nothing to do with Sky -merely a dodgy sub contractor saving himself time and money! Bet he gets a "standard" payment for the install!
